Fireplace Odors

Do you have unpleasant smells coming from your fireplace? It’s most likely due to a buildup of soot and creosote, which are byproducts of burning wood. Creosote can stick to the walls of your chimney and is the leading cause of chimney fires.

Black Spots on Fireplace Walls

Have you noticed a black, oily substance on the walls of your fireplace? This is a buildup of creosote and can be removed by a chimney technician. It is important to remove creosote to prevent chimney fires.

Weak Fires

If it’s difficult to start a fire in your fireplace, your chimney could be clogged. Poorly burning fires can also be a result of a malfunctioning damper. Both issues restrict the amount of oxygen that reaches your fire, stopping it from burning properly. These problems can be fixed by a knowledgeable chimney technician.

How Does a Fireplace Work?

Fireplaces work by creating a non-combustible environment, where a fire can be started, built, and maintained, and works in tandem with your chimney. In a masonry fireplace, the chimney is the passageway for smoke and gasses to be removed safely from your home. The part that connects the chimney to the firebox is called the smoke chamber, the smoke chamber is built like an upside-down funnel and is the transition from a wide opening in the firebox to the narrower opening of the chimney.

A fire is built in the inner hearth. You may notice that the back wall in your hearth is angled slightly forward before it meets the damper, this angle allows heat to be pushed out into the home while the smoke and gasses rise into the chimney, thereby heating your home safely. In a prefabricated fireplace, there is no smoke chamber the flue comes directly out of the firebox and goes straight up to the roof the damper is located at the throat of the firebox to allow for ventilation and an updraft when in use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to have a chimney cleaned when there's nice carpet around it?

Our professionals take great care to protect the homes of our customers. Leaving our workspace clean and beautiful is as important to us as the quality chimney care we provide.

How long does it take for a team to arrive after requesting a visit?

We can typically make it to your home within 3-4 days of your initial call.

Do chimneys for gas fires need serviced?

Definitely; all flues can get blocked by debris from animals and exhaust from the fire can cause corrosive buildup. There is also risk that the venting system isn't working properly if the gas stove was installed after the chimney. The installers are not necessarily interested in making sure the system is acceptable as much as getting it installed.

How often should my chimney be swept?

Each chimney and fireplace is different, so there's no perfect answer. The easiest way to know when your chimney needs cleaned is to have it inspected annually as recommended by the NFPA.
