Why is There Sand in My Fireplace?

If you notice that your mortar is crumbling and see signs of small sand deposits in the fireplace or if it crumbles when you run a finger over it you have a problem. When this happens it means that, due to the build-up of creosote, you need to have the mortar replaced or otherwise known as tuckpointing. You see when creosote mixes with water it becomes acidic, this acid can then eat away at the silica in the mortar reducing it back to sand, this is why it crumbles, silica is the bonding agent in a mortar, and if you remove that the mortar is reduced to its original form. This can be repaired by a professional chimney sweep and should be done so as soon as possible. Too much missing mortar can compromise the masonry work and has the potential to collapse your entire fireplace.

Negative Air Pressure

Air that moves through the chimney brings in fireplace smells and chimney odors.

Excess Creosote & Soot

This odor is often described as a heavy smoky smell

Moisture

Unless the fireplace is totally closed and protection measures are taken to stop water interruption, smelly scents can overpower the smokestack and home.

Animals (Dead or Alive)

If you don’t have a chimney cap or if creatures have bitten through the screen on the smokestack top, it is truly conceivable that animals have moved to the fireplace; creatures cause an assortment of odor issues

Where Is That Odor Coming From?

Imagine you and your family are sitting in the living room watching movies on the television above the fireplace and mantel. Next thing you know, there is a strange smell appears in the air. Little does anyone know that it is coming from the fireplace? Odds are that your home has Stinky Fireplace Syndrome. This scent normally is worse in the late spring when the moisture/humidity is high and the climate control system is turned on. This smell can linger in a home. It may appear that all hope is lost, well there is a solution. Before we dive into that, let’s discuss some causes of the chimney odor.

Chimney Inspection

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to have a chimney cleaned when there's nice carpet around it?

Our professionals take great care to protect the homes of our customers. Leaving our workspace clean and beautiful is as important to us as the quality chimney care we provide.

How long does it take for a team to arrive after requesting a visit?

We can typically make it to your home within 3-4 days of your initial call.

Do chimneys for gas fires need serviced?

Definitely; all flues can get blocked by debris from animals and exhaust from the fire can cause corrosive buildup. There is also risk that the venting system isn't working properly if the gas stove was installed after the chimney. The installers are not necessarily interested in making sure the system is acceptable as much as getting it installed.

How often should my chimney be swept?

Each chimney and fireplace is different, so there's no perfect answer. The easiest way to know when your chimney needs cleaned is to have it inspected annually as recommended by the NFPA.
